What else is lost (esp if CPB is defunded, not just NPR and PBS) is truly a source for accurate news when disaster strikes and the internet goes dark. This was most recently evident with Blue Ridge Public Radio's heroic reporting in the aftermath of Helene. When the battery packs for your phone dry up, people could still tune into the radio to know where it was safe to drive, where to get potable water, and where to find shelter. Could other radio stations do the same thing in a crisis? Sure. But public radio is trusted to be there for communities.
I hear you. I'm seeing the same old arguments being trotted out to defend public media on social media as in past GOP administrations -- it's only $1.25 pp; informing rural communities, the children's programming, etc. These arguments won't hold water in this regime. But we shouldn't forget the real UVP they have in a crisis.
When the mainstream media and other media outlets start reporting the truth and leave out the opinion of the writer…maybe I will start listening. But the mainstream media or “fake news” has a very long way to go before they earn the respect of most people who can think for themselves. I understand that the “puppet masters” have put an enormous burden on their writers and reporters but you couldn’t pay me enough to get in front of a camera and blatantly LIE to the American people. We deserve the truth and nothing will ever change my stance on that truth.
A small group of executives representing media and journalism support orgs have drafted this open letter that calls upon elected leaders of the executive and legislative branches to restore press access, continue funding of public media, and protect journalists domestically and abroad. This letter is intended to be public facing, and we invite anyone to join and share it with your networks. Now that we have surpassed fifty signatures in the first few day we’ve taken it public. It will be delivered at noon ET on 5/1. https://pressfreedom.ac-page.com/home
When PBS/NPR/CPB was created we had 3 national networks. PBS/NPR filled a void, a void that no longer exists. Let PBS/NPR/CPB stand on its own two legs and forego any funding from Congress. time to let the baby grow up. if it is really need the money will come

Agreed. Just don't think this point is as likely to be as decisive as in the past. The Administration just yesterday proposed abolishing FEMA.

"economic dependence on the government is antithetical to the very idea of a free press..." Amen!
