Thanks for this approach to exploring these books. It's clear that the press -- and the country -- needs a better understanding of and more conversations about aging.
No matter the actual contents of this or any book on this subject, you land squarely and correctly on the simple point that it is our (journalists) responsibility to independently evaluate claims about health and mental competence of leadership. The recent failings go in both directions: looking the other way at Bidens slippage, and glib, semi-hysterical diagnosis of Trumps mental states.
Fascinating and frustrating. Had the press been more acute, perhaps there would have been a true Democratic primary season in 2024 (pace, Dean Phillips) that would have forced the issue sooner.
Excellent review that asks all the right questions. I was one of the US majority who early on thought Biden should not run again--that an 82-year-old man had no right to seek a four year contract for the world's hardest job. If he had remained a one-term transitional president, as he had suggested, we would all be praising him for his judgment and perhaps humility. In the end, however, he helped elect Trump.
The press did fail, perhaps in part because they viewed the alternative--Trump--with great disdain.
Yes, the politburo reached the correct conclusion: that the more undecided voters knew about the vice president, the less likely they were to vote for her. Thus, prop up Biden as long as possible, including past the point of credibility. A terrible shame for our country and the world that such delusions and cowardice infect our critical institutions.

Richard,

Well done and greetings...

I agree with Stuart!

Ok, everyone failed. Leave Biden to the historians now. Journalists need to be concentrating on Trump and his shenanigans.
