How Paul Steiger Helped Spawn Modern Journalistic Collaborations
Dick, Thank you so much for this kind and generous advance present to help me celebrate my 79th birthday this Sunday. I'm enjoying retirement in substantial part by admiring the wonderful work of ProPublica's brilliant staff, led by you, Dick Tofel, as president, and Steve Engelberg as editor in chief, who were there at the launch in 2007 and have built ProPublica into the largest and best investigative reporting team anywhere. Dick honors me by crediting me with the partnership model, but he and Steve and our many other colleagues substantially sharpened and strengthened that model over the years. And of course the initial spark for ProPublica's creation came from our launch funders, the late Herb and Marion Sandler, who got us thinking about how best to structure a truly productive non-profit reporting team and provided not only robust funding but wise management guidance. Thanks so much to all who joined in this great service to the public.
Great commentary, Dick. The Journal was very fortunate to have Paul Steiger all those years!
Thank you and congratulations from a huge admirer of ProPublica, Paul Steiger, and Dick Tofel. The spotlight PA partnership model is worth note. We now have over 70 publications and NPR stations in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania publishing exclusive investigative news in partnership, inspired partly by your work.
