Interesting analysis, I wonder if the data is also misleading in that the mandatory reporting for Newsmatch is for organizations with budgets under 1M, and AJP does not fund organizations with budgets under 1M.

I read many of the studies about local news and nonprofit news. I don't trust them and find them a waste of money, often rare charity dollars. The ones that have information about the state - NH - where we publish InDepthNH.org are often wrong and/or don't measure what is important to providing real unbiased news that matters to people. They sometimes include shoppers and political rags in the same mix with news outlets doing a competent job. Please, no more studies. Support the local news outlets that you vet yourself instead. How many members of INN and LION (we belong to both) have failed because they can't get enough funding to become sustainable operations. How many deserve to fail is another question no one asks. We were lucky and got a Press Forward grant and it was a big help, but not enough. I might change my mind about studies and say OK one more, study Press Forward. How did such a great idea go so wrong? I appreciate Steve Katz and Dick Tofel for paying attention to what is happening and getting the truth out. - Nancy West
