100%.

The "finger on the scale" phenomenon is always an issue when money is involved. Google, unsurprisingly, manages ads for its own benefit. You bid but they analyze click probabilities.

I do think it is ironic (to the point of being darkly funny) that they got all high and mighty about protecting IP when they exist in large measure because of their success in privatizing public or other private resources.

Fear is a real factor and the guardrails are designed to keep them out of court.

In analyzing the behavior of LLMs, it is really important to understand that they don't "know" stuff (they aren't adjudicating) and don't make inferences based on that knowledge. There are intense arguments about whether they have concepts and reason (the chain-of-thought is not what we generally imagine). If AI is an intelligence, it is of a very alien kind.

Dick is exactly right that the winds that blow the sails of that ship are largely in the direction of the economically beneficial. And fear. They don't want to get in trouble with entities that can really hurt them. Journalists beware!

In my view, this is part of the reason that we need a different approach to the development of AI.
