I think the point about the value of dissenting or contrarian voices is very important (not just for newsrooms!). I also agree that flaws aside, the NYTimes is essential and I read it every single day!

Indeed: "The Times is the best newsroom in this country, perhaps in the world, and it produces an astonishing amount of great content"... I've spent my entire career in GOP politics and the advocacy/lobbying periphery and have started my day with the NYT and the WSJ for 40 years... the best habit of my professional life. NYT-bashing by the GOP has historically been selective even going back to the Reagan years: When the NYT reports news antithetical to GOP talking points, it's said "Well, of course! -- the NYT is a liberal rag!" When the NYT reports news unfavorable to Dems, it's said "Even the NYT says [fill in the blank]" about a Democratic policy or politician. Selective outrage -- just like EVERYTHING in D.C. these days.
