Good column. Two additions worth noting:

(1) While unreviewed, the Princeton book was featured on the Times' flagship podcast, The Daily, during which host Mike Barbaro spoke directly to the authors rather than talking to a Times reporter (the standard format). https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/20/podcasts/the-daily/were-the-covid-lockdowns-worth-it.html

Make of that what you will.

(2) Asked to reflect on the last two years of COVID-related education coverage, former NPR education reporter Anya Kamenetz told me that it was education reporters’ responsibility to make sure that COVID education stories didn’t solely report about schools on the basis of disease spread risks, as a health or science reporter might do.

“Because if you look at schools only through the lens of how they may or may not spread diseases, you would make very different decisions” than if you looked at them more holistically.

We could have been a lot louder,' says NPR's Anya Kamenetz
